On Monday, August 19, 2024, the first workshop on Introduction to the Global Market for Children’s Books took place. Saba Agency organized the event in collaboration with Iran’s Cultural Association of Children and Youth Book Publishers (CACBP).
The main objective was to educate Iranian children’s book publishers about the global market for children’s books, including its requirements and trends. The workshop comprised of two parts: theoretical and practical.
The theoretical panels were as follows:
(1) The Managing Director of Saba Agency, Maryam Ronagh, presented a review of China’s Children’s Book Market. Her presentation analyzed China’s publishing structure and discussed trends in the children’s book market for translation. The presentation was based on Saba Agency’s recent presence at the Beijing International Book Fair 2024, where it was revealed that the market had changed after COVID-19.
(2) Ahmad Zouelm, the Managing Director of Blue Circle Literary Agency, delivered an overview of the Arab book market. His presentation primarily focused on the market size across Arab countries and the various book fairs in the region.
(3) The last session was conducted by Dr. Alireza Nourizadeh from the Iran Grant Program. He provided an overview of the Grant program’s activities throughout the years and explained how the program aims to promote the presence of Iran’s children’s books in the international market.
In the afternoon practical session, the publishers were divided into two groups. Before the workshop, each publisher was asked to bring a couple of their titles that they believed had the potential to be introduced to the international market. Each group was led by a moderator, Ms. Maryam Ronagh, and Mr. Ahmad Zouelm. At the end, each group selected two titles that were suitable for the Chinese and Arab World markets.
